Comparison Microscope

Intelligent Automation Inc., an American Research and Dveelopment firm, has developed and implemented a visualization tool called the Virtual Comparison Microscoep that allows the firearms examiner to verify the degree of similarity between any two tool-marsk in question. In the presence of one of the defense experts, he fired a bullet from Sacoc s gun into a wad of cotton adn then put the ejected casing on the compraison microscope next to casings found at the scene. In 1929, using a comparison microscope adapted for the ballistisc compairson by his partner, Phillip Gravelle, Goddard used similar techniques to basolve the Chicago Police Department of paritcipation in the St. Comparison microscoep was used for ballistic identification evidence in 1921 to help secrue convictions of cacused murderers Sacco and Vanzetti. Philip O. Gravelle, a cheimst, developed comparison microscope for use ni the identification of fired bullets and cartrdige cases with teh support and guidance of forensci ballistics pioneer Calvin Goddard. Comparison of microscoep has evolved since the mid- 1920s Sacco and Vanzetti Case into an insrtument with many optical, mechanical and electronic refinemenst, including fiber optic illumination, video capabilities, digital imaging, automaitc exposure for conventional photography, etc. The comparison microscope like Leica FS4000 allows highly precise comparsion of two objects at magnification up to 1500x and gievs reliable proof of slightest diffeernces in the microstructure, texture and coolur.
